Sources, methods and participation
Orreria assembles original place readings from authored material, reviewed source notes, environmental models and nearby public observations. A citation identifies supporting material; it does not mean the source endorses Orreria or verifies every sentence.
Live providers
- OpenStreetMap contributors, through Nominatim: locality resolution under ODbL. Application traffic is serialized, named results cached, and search is explicitly initiated. See the Nominatim usage policy.
- Open-Meteo: weather and timezone context; weather data is provided under CC BY 4.0. Orreria uses its noncommercial service; terms and privacy apply. Model outputs are not on-site observations, and fallback estimates may be used.
- iNaturalist: nearby research-grade observation facts, with individual record links, plus processed taxonomy and range-map context. No observation photographs, journal prose, audio or original observer coordinates are returned by this connector. Observer content has individual licenses; these remain with its owners. Terms and API practices.
Offline timezones
Timezones are resolved locally using geo-tz and timezone-boundary-builder / OpenStreetMap geographic data (ODbL). No coordinates are sent to another service for this local lookup. Boundary and historical limitations still apply. Open-Meteo is a fallback lookup if the geographic timezone is ambiguous.
Stored environmental and cultural context
Processed EPA ecoregions and iNaturalist taxonomy/range layers provide broad context. Nearby observations and modeled ranges are distinct evidence. Folklore and environmental memory use Orreria’s authored interpretations and existing reviewed source trail; the connector returns bounded prose and citations, not documents or corpus downloads. Sensitive cultural knowledge and candidate records remain subject to existing human-review gates. No broad rights clearance is implied for source websites.
Help improve the directory
Use Help Build Orreria for corrections, local knowledge and source leads. Community contributions are reviewed before they affect public readings. Cultural attribution, recognition status, local applicability and rights questions require human judgment. The connector cannot submit or approve changes.
